1987: Europe’s Ryder Cup team inflicted the first home defeat on the United States since the tournament began in 1927. Tony Jacklin’s side won 15-13 in Ohio.

2008: Durham won their maiden County Championship title after they beat Kent and Nottinghamshire drew against Hampshire.

2011: Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini claimed that striker Carlos Tevez refused to go on as a substitute in a Champions League match against Bayern Munich, leading to a major rift.

Ricky Hatton made the 10th defence of his WBU light-welterweight title in Manchester. Argentina’s Aldo Rios retired after the ninth round.
