The focus was on the gains made by Labour at the general election.

Flanked by the 30 new MPs elected in June, Mr Corbyn said the party had defied the odds to win the largest increase in the Labour vote since 1945, adding: “It’s a result which has put Labour on the threshold of power.

“Yes, we didn’t do quite well enough and we remain in opposition for now but we have become a government-in-waiting.”

Mr Corbyn said the result proved Labour was “ready for power” and the Tories were now “hanging on by their fingertips”.
