Public servants “make the difference every day between a decent and a threadbare society”, Mr Corbyn told the conference.

“Everyone praises them but it is Labour that values them and is prepared to give them the pay rise they deserve.

“The Tories have cut budgets and squeezed public sector pay, while cutting taxes for the highest earners and the big corporations.”

He added: “You can’t protect the public on the cheap.

“The police and security services must get the resources they need, not 20,000 police cuts.”
