Firms that fail to give male and female staff equal pay will face tough financial penalties.

Large companies will have to carry out equal-pay audits and the Equality and Human Rights Commission will be given funding to drive the changes through.

Labour will introduce the mandatory audits in all businesses with more than 250 employees.

Failure to comply would result in civil penalties that reflect the scale of the offence and size of firm.

Mr Corbyn pledged: “Our party in government will take action to close the gender pay gap.”
