£100 council fine for cake charity sale
ESTATE agent staff having a charity cake sale were fined £100 by a council enforcement officer.
Fundraisers, who had laid out cupcakes and coffee, had breached a “Public Space Protection Order” with a small ad on a board outside the shop.
One member of staff at Connell’s burst into tears as the official pounced on the charity event for Macmillan Cancer Support in Chelmsford, Essex.
A worker said: “We are trying to save lives. Would you put a ticket on an ambulance or fire engine?”
Chelmsford City Council defended the fine.
A spokesman said: “The order is in place to reduce the impact of boards on pedestrians, residents and visitors, especially those who are visually impaired.”
