‘Lost’ picture from 1625 is put on show

- BY LUCINDA CAMERON

A PORTRAIT thought to be lost for almost 400 years is on show after its discovery on a TV programme.

The 17th century work by Flemish artist Sir Peter Paul Rubens was found in Glasgow Museums’ collection at Pollok House.

The portrait of George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham was thought to be a copy of the lost original.

But an episode of the BBC Four series Britain’s Lost Masterpieces, which aired on Wednesday, confirmed it was a genuine Rubens, dating from 1625.

The picture has now gone on show at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow.

Cllr David McDonald of culture body Glasgow Life, said: “This is a must-see for the millions visiting Kelvingrove every year.”
