Each new FIFA has become an annual staple of the footballing calendar. And this new game is bigger and better than last year’s in every way.

It retains all the previous game modes, including the single-player Journey campaign introduced last year, as well as Career Mode and FIFA Ultimate Team (FUT). Each one has been expanded with more depth, extra players and better rewards.

Gameplay feels slightly more tactical than last year’s effort. Refinements to the AI team mean you’re now afforded more space as your virtual teammates spread the opposition and give you time to manoeuvre. Dribbling is a bit tighter and crossing is now lower and more direct.

Lastly, a new one-click substitution option has been added to boost the game’s flow.

It might not be the graphical jump FIFA 16 to 17 was, but it’s still the best footy game out there.
