- By BRUCE JONES Military Firearms Expert and Jane’s Defence Correspondent

THE repetitive rattle of staccato gunfire that is the signature of the Kalashnikov family rang out at the concert. As the gunman is said to have had nine or 10 assault rifles and was able to fire for many minutes, it is possible he expended more than 5,000 rounds of ammunition. The attack intensified with bursts lasting 10 seconds from large 75-round drum magazines. Later, the sharper and more rapid fire of an Armalite AR-15 seemed audible.
