SHOPPERS are being warned to wash reusable carrier bags amid food poisoning fears.

And raw foods such as meat, fish and loose veg should be packed separately from other items in colour-coded bags to avoid cross-contamination.

The advice comes as Morrisons became the latest supermarket to ditch 5p single-use plastic carriers in favour of 10p bags for life.

The Food Standards Agency is urging the precautionary meas- ures to avoid bacteria such as campylobacter or E.coli spreading among their groceries.

The agency also suggests dumping plastic bags soiled by spillages and washing fabric ones. The FSA said: “Raw meat, fish and shellfish, loose vegetables with soil on, and eggs can contain germs that cause food poisoning.”

It also urges shoppers to wash their hands after a grocery shop.

Chains such as Tesco and Sainsbury’s have already ditched 5p bags for durable bags for life.
