Doctor Foster ends with lost son
IT was misery all round in Doctor Foster’s finale as warring ex-couple Gemma and Simon both ended up losers when son Tom disappeared.
BBC One viewers were shocked by last night’s twist as the damaged teen realised he would be better off without either of them – and simply vanished.
Now viewers will have to wait for at least two years for a possible third series in which GP Gemma, played by Suranne Jones, would strive to be reunited with her troubled son.
Suranne, 39, has revealed that writer Mike Bartlett has already plotted an outline for her character’s next chapter.
But it remains to be seen if the BBC will order another follow-up and Suranne said before last night’s finale: “If people are still interested in 2019 in that third story, then maybe.”
ABANDONED
The final straw for Tom (young actor Tom Taylor) came when his suicidal father gave a farewell speech over a hotel breakfast table – leaving him in little doubt of what he was planning. And viewers finally learned the truth about what Simon (Bertie Carvel) had told Tom in order to make the lad leave Gemma and move in with him – that she had abandoned him as a baby. What he omitted to mention, however, was that she was suffering from post-natal depression. More than eight million viewers have been gripped by divorced Gemma and Simon’s efforts to get one over on the other during the show’s second series. Suranne, who became a mum herself after the first series of Doctor Foster, hopes the show helps viewers make better decisions in their own lives. She said: “I certainly hope it makes people think about how they conduct themselves if they do split with somebody.” Next year Suranne is starring in West End thriller Frozen, which will be followed by Sally Wainwright’s new TV drama Gentleman Jack.
