UNILEVER TO CUT THE MUSTARD?

-

Unilever could axe production of Colman’s Mustard at its Norwich factory after nearly 160 years.

The multi-national, which bought the family favourite condiment in 1995, confirmed it was “reviewing” the future of the Carrow Works site, which employs 113 people.

It follows proposals by Britvic to shut its part of the same site, which makes Robinsons squash drinks and Fruit Shoot.

Britvic yesterday announced plans to transfer production to East London, Leeds and Rugby, putting 242 jobs at risk. Colman’s has occupied the site since 1858. Production of Robinsons moved there in 1925 as part of a takeover. Britvic blamed “efficiency savings” for the planned closure. Boss Simon Litherland insisted: “This is not a proposal that we make lightly.” Unilever said: “We need to recognise that Britvic’s proposed withdrawal would have serious implications for Unilever in Norwich.” Unite national officer Rhys McCarthy added: “This is very painful news for our members and their families.”
