Time to shoot down crazy US gun laws

-

SADLY, it has taken the needless deaths of many innocent people to bring American gun laws into sharp focus.

Perhaps they should note that in Canada, where private gun ownership per capita is higher than in the US, there is substantially less firearm-related crime. This suggests that improper gun use, not ownership, is the often fatal difference.

In Canada, the privately owned weapons are usually held securely at authorised gun clubs, where they are used to fire safely at targets, not lethally at fellow humans.

A society that condones virtually unrestricted access to such militaryscale firepower will always have to endure mass shootings.

US lawmakers must make positive changes, or accept that their inaction will mean these all too familiar tragic incidents will keep being repeated – and the next time it could be in their back yard. Alexander Bell, Kettering, Northants

# What a pathetic response from Donald Trump to yet another terrible gun tragedy in America – all the dead being victims of the powerful gun-lobbying National Rifle Association and the right to bear arms.

A good President would address Congress to implement measures to change gun laws, not suck up to gun manufactures and national firearms associations to gain votes for his Presidency.

Trump is a disgrace to his nation. Reg Barrett Southminster Essex available to anyone who wakes up in the morning hating the world?

America reaps what it sows. In any normal domestic situation, what would anyone want with such a weapon, other than to wreak havoc? Terry Kingsland, Stevenage, Herts # Surely, it is time ordinary Americans stood up to the powerful gun lobby and demanded a change in the country’s insane gun laws? President Trump shouts about the need to secure the country from terrorists, but the greatest threat to US citizens comes from powerful assault weapons in the hands of maniacs. America’s attachment to the right to bear arms defies all logic. H Richardson, Reading Berks

# So there has been another massacre in America by a lone gunman. Surely, it is time their Government took a fresh look at their crazy gun laws? To allow unstable psychopaths to purchase hand guns without adequate checks is bad enough, but to allow them to buy highpowered assault rifles and semi-automatic machine guns is just insanity. The powerful gun lobby will oppose any controls, but a ban on ownership is essential. DA Shaw, Tamworth, Staffs # I know it has all been said before, but what sane American would support legislation that allows automatic weapons and an endless supply of ammunition to be readily

# No, President Trump. Calling the Las Vegas gunman evil is avoiding the real evil – and that is the US gun laws. Trump received millions of dollars from the National Rifle Association for his election campaign. Surely, the term ‘blood money’ has never been more apt. Collin Rossini Dovercourt Essex
