A SIGN on the ground floor of a tower block in Newcastle reads: “If in doubt, get out.”
INVESTIGATE Matt teams up with the housing enforcers
BBC1, 9pm This story behind the sirens is both stressful and heartwarming, with the kindness of the emergency service staff never failing to amaze.
There are dramatic incidents tonight including a man threatening suicide with an overdose washed down with “a bottle of Jacky-D”, and a trainspotter who has tripped and hurt his head.
But it’s the quieter scenes with an elderly couple that will tug at the heartstrings. Crewmates Nina and Sham are called when Lucy, 94, rings 999 because husband Harold, 97, has fallen and she can’t lift him up. Lucy, tiny and frail, also can’t reach the bolt to let Nina and Sham in and gives them a scare when she wants to use a chair.
Fortunately they talk her out of it and Nina squeezes in through the window.
There is concern for this couple living by themselves, but the crew also enjoy the story of how Harold and Lucy first met over cups of tea, proving there can be laughs too.
