Royal Mail’s legal threat over strike
ROYAL Mail has threatened a court injunction if the postal workers’ union does not halt plans for a 48-hour strike by Monday.
In the first national stoppage since privatisation four years ago, staff are planning to walk out on Thursday, October 19.
The strike, by 111,000 members of the Communication Workers Union, is over pensions, pay and jobs – and was backed by 89% of a turnout of 73%.
Royal Mail said it wrote to the CWU invoking a “legally binding” external mediation process. It said: “If CWU does not withdraw its notice of strike action by 12 noon Monday 9 October, Royal Mail will lodge an application with the High Court for an injunction to prevent industrial action.”
