New Lady Lucan: I don’t believe Earl killed nanny

THE new Lady Lucan has dismissed the idea that her late father-in-law murdered her husband’s nanny, branding the evidence “weak”.

Anne-Sofie Foghsgaard gave her frank assessment of claims the 7th Earl of Lucan killed Sandra Rivett.

She said: “It’s time for everyone to move on.”

The Danish heiress became Lady Lucan just weeks ago when her mother-in-law died.

In an extraordinary interview, she also told how the family was still feuding up to the death of Veronica, Dowager Countess of Lucan.

The new Lady Lucan, who married 8th Earl George Bingham, 50, last year, said: “When we announced our engagement I wrote a letter to her inviting her to tea and to our wedding. I dropped it round to her flat by hand.

“She did not come. Obviously, that made my husband extremely sad. I felt very sorry for her but also extremely grateful to her because she gave birth to George.” The countess said she knew nothing of the family past when she met financial consultant George 10 years ago. His father the 7th Earl, presumed dead, allegedly killed Ms Rivett – nanny to George and his two sisters – before disappearing in 1974. Lady Lucan, 39, said: “It seems to me the evidence is weak. I don’t care.” She added: “The children remember their father as being funny, warm and kind. “George is the love of my life. [The murder] had nothing to do with him – he was a small boy asleep in his bed when it happened. “Those were very, very dark times for George and, like any of us, he doesn’t like to dwell on dark times. But it’s time for everybody to move on. It’s a new era.” The countess now hopes to reinvent the family name by launching a Lucan clothing brand. She said: “It’s a fresh start for the name.”
