GOOD GORD
Southgate hails match-winner Kane as ‘best striker I’ve seen’
GARETH SOUTHGATE ranked Harry Kane alongside the best strikers he has ever worked with, after the Tottenham star yet again bailed out boring England.
Kane’s 27th-minute penalty means he has now scored on the last four occasions he has captained the Three Lions.
Southgate, who played with Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen, said: “It’s a fantastic
record. His finishing quality is top, as good as anyone I’ve played with or worked with.
“I’m never in doubt that, if he has a good opportunity, it’ll be on target and there’s a fair chance he scores.
“We’re fortunate to have him. But the likes of Marcus Rashford, at 19, just need a bit more time.” Kane, 24, was again given the armband by Southgate, and the hitman has now scored 12 goals in 23 appearances for England.
His spot-kick was his 15th goal for club and country this season and his ninth in his last five games.
It ensured England ended their World Cup qualifying campaign with another win, despite their low-key finale.
And the Three Lions boss added: “I couldn’t be happier with he way that he’s led, both on the pitch with his performances, but also with the group.”
But Southgate would not be drawn on when a full-time captain would be appointed.
