Smart crossing to save lives

-

A CROSSING which lights up when a pedestrian using a mobile phone steps in front of traffic has been unveiled.

Cameras also detect when lots of people are waiting and smart technology makes wider lines on the road. There are warnings to cyclists if pedestrians are hidden by high vehicles. Rachael Lynch, of insurers Direct Line, which developed the crossing with tech firm Umbrellium, said: “In a world immersed in mobile technology, it can pre-empt danger.”

A prototype was showcased near Mitcham, South London. About 20 potentially dangerous incidents occur daily on an average UK crossing.
