POCH POPS OUT ANOTHER ONE, AS QUICK AS A WINK

- BY DARREN LEWIS

THE Mauricio Pochettino conveyor belt has churned out another one.

Tottenham’s starmaker just can’t stop supplying players for England.

Since his arrival in the Premier League four years ago, the Argentine (below) has inspired underachievers to believe in themselves, good players to catch the eye of top clubs and rising stars to stand out.

Harry Kane is now rubbing shoulders with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in terms of his recent goalscoring record.

The Spanish clubs are also talking about Dele Alli – viewed as a potential alternative to Coutinho.

Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert all earned moves to top clubs during Pochettino’s time at Southampton.

And Spurs’ Harry Winks has become the 14th player under Pochettino’s management or previous stewardship to make it into the England squad. So how does the Argentine do it?

“He gives everyone that confidence to just go and play and show what they have got,” said the midfielder, described by his club boss as ‘Little Iniesta’.

“As a player that is the most important thing.”

Not only has Pochettino turned his Tottenham also-rans into title contenders, he has made English players fashionable again. Gareth Southgate may struggle to fuse the stellar parts for the Three Lions. Stardust sprinkled on them by Pochettino, however, has sent their value through the roof.

Last season his young Tottenham team challenged for the title after forcing their way into the Champions League for only the second time.

This term they are back at Europe’s top table to prove last year was no fluke.

“It is well documented English players struggle to get opportunities in the Premier League, which is difficult for us,” added Winks. “Obviously when you get that opportunity, not only is it great for the manager to do it, but as players we have to justify that. “Not only has he helped me physically and technically, he’s helped me mentally and that is something I can’t thank him enough for.”

There is an acceptance that 21-year-old Winks, with his trademark black boots, is more one for the future having just four Premier League starts so far.

While other players at other clubs grow fed-up of waiting for their chance, Pochettino’s inclusive man-management means Winks has had the motivation to hang in there, even during last year’s injury-wrecked campaign.

“He was just how you want a manager to be,” said Winks. “He was fantastic and really helped me out when I was feeling down.”
