Nuke closure costs rocket

THE cost of retiring 12 old nuclear plants has nearly doubled, the National Audit Office has found.

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority’s 14-year plan to shut the Magnox facilities soared from £3.8billion to £6.2billion.

The NAO said: “The NDA’s failures…raise serious questions about its ability to manage.”

The Department for Business said: “The Secretary of State has been clear that the reasons for the failure should be exposed.”
