Families’ moors fears
JUDGES are being urged to stop the ashes of child killer Ian Brady being scattered on Saddleworth Moor.
It is the resting place of his five victims and were Brady’s remains left there it would cause outrage.
Today Oldham and Tameside councils, which cover the hilly area near Manchester, will make an application at the High Court to block any such move.
At the inquest in May, Coroner Christopher Sumner had sought assurances the ashes would not be scattered there.
Amid protests from Brady’s lawyer Robin Makin, Mr Sumner said he did not have the power to make the request but believed VICTIM Lesley Ann Downey it was the “right moral judgement”. But where the remains are finally disposed of will remain secret under a High Court order, made after the councils gave notice of their legal application.

scattered on Saddleworth, Lesley Ann Downey’s brother Terry West, now 66, said it would “cause his victims’ families the greatest upset from beyond the grave”.
The killer’s legal team has refused to reveal Brady’s funeral wishes, saying they would emerge in “due course”. He came from Glasgow and the city’s council said no funeral directors would scatter his ashes in Glasgow. His body is now held at a secret location.
Hindley died in 2002 and her ashes are at Highpoint Prison, Suffolk.
The pair were jailed for life for torturing and murdering John Kilbride, 12, Lesley Ann Downey, 10, and Edward Evans, 17.
They admitted killing Pauline Reade, 16, and Keith Bennett, 12.
