Fury at Trump stance on Iran

-

DONALD Trump has sparked outrage by seeming to provoke Iran on to a war-footing.

European leaders condemned the US President for refusing to certify the Iran nuclear deal as he unveiled a new, tougher strategy towards the Tehran regime.

This is a blow to Theresa May and leaders who urged him to back the agreement.

Britain, France and Germany in a joint statement said they “stand committed” to the Iran nuclear deal and are “concerned by implications” of Mr Trump’s refusal to back it.

He accused Tehran of violating the spirit of the 2015 agreement and is referring the decision to Congress, who will decide whether or not to re-impose sanctions on Iran. He said without measures to toughen it up “the agreement will be terminated”.

Israel’s intelligence minister Israel Katz claimed Mr Trump’s speech was “significant”. When asked whether he saw a risk of war after the US President’s speech, he replied: “Absolutely, yes.”

Federica Mogherini, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, said the Iran nuclear deal is working well and continues to prevent the country from developing atomic weapons.

But Mr Trump warned that the country “has to behave much differently”.

Iran President Hassan Rouhani said in a live TV address Mr Trump’s speech was full of “insults and fake accusations”.
