Runner races to marathon number 800
A SUPER-fit grandfather ran his 800th marathon yesterday – 36 years after taking part in his first following a drunken bet.
Steve Edwards, 54, also entered the record books as he crossed the finish line in the Birmingham International Marathon.
He is the first man to average under 3hrs 20mins in 800 official races.
Steve, of Moreton-inMarsh, Glos, said: “I’m very happy but very relieved to have done it after yet another tough race. They don’t get any easier.”
The IT worker ran his first long-distance race in Coventry in 1981 after pals on a boozy night out dared him to enter.
He has averaged a marathon every fortnight over the past 30 years and raised £25,000 for charity.
