Ask Dr Miriam
Q I’m in my middle 60s and I’ve lived with a heart valve defect all my life. Last time I saw my doctor he said I should have a check-up with my dentist. Why? There doesn’t seem to be a connection. A Well, there is. People with some types of congenital heart disease are at risk of infective endocarditis where bacteria cling to the defective area in the lining of the heart and cause damage.
The reason your doctor wants you to see a dentist is that some dental procedures cause bacteria to enter the bloodstream (bacteraemia) which can increase your risk of endocarditis.
I think your doctor is just warning you that if you’re going to have any dental interventions you should tell your dentist first about your heart and you’ll possibly be given antibiotics. As you’re at risk, maintain good oral hygiene and don’t have any tattoos or piercings!
