Comic Sean Hughes dies at 51

‘Star suffered liver cirrhosis complicati­ons’

COMEDIAN Sean Hughes has died of health problems believed to be linked to years of boozing.

Street, playing Eileen Grimshaw’s lover Pat. The London-born Irish comic, also a novelist, once admitted pushing his body to “extreme hedonistic limits” and said his attempts to be teetotal failed.

He joked in 2014: “When I started drinking again, I thought my friends would be concerned but they welcomed my return with a ‘great to have you back’ attitude. Apparently I’m tedious when I’m sober.”

Comic Rhona Cameron, 52, spoke of meeting her old pal on TV last year. She said: “We won Pointless Celebritie­s together... I did see him shaking and sweating a lot and there was always a constant smell of alcohol around him.”

Other comedy stars paid tribute yesterday including Jack Dee, Dara O’Briain and Omid Djalili.

It is understood the star, 51, was admitted to Whittingto­n Hospital, North London, with liver cirrhosis before suffering a cardiac arrest.

His final tweet, dated October 8, simply said he was “in hospital”.

Sean was a pioneering stand-up and in 1990, aged 24, became one of the youngest comedians to win the prestigiou­s Perrier Award.

He received critical acclaim for Channel 4 sitcom Sean’s Show but was perhaps best known for being a captain on BBC music panel show Never Mind The Buzzcocks.
