All abusers should be held to account

-

Hillary Clinton is correct when she says the abuse of power, sexual harassment and impropriety goes all the way to the White House. Harvey Weinstein is rightly suffering as a result of his actions, yet Donald Trump freely admits to harassing women as a perk of his fame and passes it off as “locker room talk” when, in reality, it’s sexual predator talk.

Whereas Weinstein is now losing things he holds dear as a consequence of his actions, Trump gets voted into office. If there is rot in Hollywood, then there is something more sinister in Washington.

Movie mogul Harvey Weinstein says he needs help and deserves a second chance after numerous allegations of sexual harassment and assault against him. Is there no end to this man’s nerve? Weinstein is a grown man who knew exactly what he was doing. He is not the victim, he is the perpetrator and should be treated as such.

In the boardroom and on the casting couch, there has always been sexual abuse through power as starlets, interns or favourites jostle for position. So, have the recent revelations from Hollywood really surprised anyone? The sudden tsunami of women declaring their experiences and horror stories, although disturbing, isn’t really shocking, or unexpected. Until those voices screaming for help are heard, nothing will change, just the names.

Sadly, it seems this disgusting treatment of women as sexual objects does not stop at Harvey Weinstein. More worryingly, Donald Trump was allowed to shrug off his inappropriate behaviour towards women as a perk of the job.

Harvey Weinstein’s misconduct is quite rightly being investigated, but what is happening about Trump? Surely, the law should apply equally to everyone.

So, Hollywood reveals its true ugly, misogynistic face after years of the sexual exploitation of vulnerable young women by movie mogul Harvey Weinstein. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Shame on all those who said nothing and did nothing, except to turn a blind eye.

Simon Icke, Aston Clinton, Bucks

As the list of women alleging harassment by film mogul Harvey Weinstein grows and grows, the inevitable happens.

Mr Weinstein declares that he is off for rehab and counselling – that old “get out” clause. He must not be allowed to get away with such abhorrent behaviour.

D A Shaw, Tamworth, Staffs

It’s not an easy thing for a victim of sexual harassment to come forward and it must have been even harder for these women as their careers were on the line.

No one, no matter how powerful, has the right to make women feel that way.
