DIVINATION

-

There may be laughter from Harry and pals at divination — the magical practice of being able to look into the future — but Emma Thompson’s Professor Trelawney knows it’s true as she predicts Harry’s destiny.

And in reality, it’s a tradition that has long been used and is still believed in by many.

The exhibition boasts the black moon crystal ball, used by a 20th century witch from Paignton in Devon called Smelly Nelly due to her taste in expensive perfume. Visitors may not have much luck peering into it but if that doesn’t work they could try the power of magic runes. Emma Watson’s Hermione Granger uses runes to translate The Tales Of Beedle The Bard to help Harry’s quest. The truth is they were an early Germanic writing system, used in Old Norse, Old High German and Old English until 1500s. The word itself means “secrecy” and the museum has antler horn examples, which are believed to have been used to make predictions in the 16th century
