Facebook is ‘killing news’

GOOGLE and Facebook are killing local papers and must do more to fund the media, a Tory MP has said.

John Whittingdale said 6.5 million people get news from Facebook even though the site “doesn’t employ a single journalist”.

He added: “There is a serious threat posed by print moving online.”

He said the web giants need to “consider giving some of their billions to local news partnerships and show they are not a destructive force”.
