STORM Brian is expected to batter Britain this weekend with 70mph gusts and heavy rain.

The barrage, described as a weather bomb, threatens to cause floods, power cuts and disruption to roads, railways and airports. Waves of 35ft are also predicted.

An intense area of low pressure could hit large parts of the country today, just days after the remnants of Hurricane Ophelia killed three people in Ireland.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for tomorrow when the worst of the weather is expected.

Southern England, the North West, the Midlands and Wales are most at risk.

The Met Office said: “Gusts exceeding 50mph are expected widely within the warning area, with gusts of around 70mph along exposed coastal areas.”

Experts warn Storm Brian could cause more chaos than Ophelia as it will be at its height during the day while the worst of Ophelia was in the middle of the night. Brian, which has triggered an amber warning in the Republic of Ireland, is the second named storm of the season.

Ophelia killed about 90 of the 120 grey seal pups on an important breeding ground, Ramsey Island in Pembrokeshire.
