ALONE IN BERLIN
Cert 12
Digital and disc Monday This intriguing Second World War thriller explores the power of propaganda, and how a simple message can spread and challenge the highest authority.
There are no epic battle scenes but the period detail and photography create a claustrophobic tone. Plus it’s always enjoyable to watch Emma Thompson and Brendan Gleeson deploy their considerable talent. As an ordinary Berlin couple they begin a quiet campaign of passive resistance against the Nazi regime. Protesting the death of their son on the frontline, their propaganda war involves writing anonymous postcards, which sparks the attention of Daniel Bruhl’s menacing investigator.
