DIEGO’S SHIRT ON POCH BOYS

- BY NEIL McLEMAN

IMAGINE a Tottenham forward line of Diego Maradona and Harry Kane. Even aged 56, the waddling Argentine would have fancied his chances against this Liverpool defence.

He is still probably more mobile than Dejan Lovren.

Maradona, who scored the Hand of God goal against Bobby Robson’s side at Mexico 1986, was still given a hero’s reception at half-time at the home of English football.

And Mauricio Pochettino said his reunion with his former Newell’s Old Boys teammate had been “so emotional”.

He admitted: “It was difficult to let him go.

“When you’re in front of Maradona you want to stay with him. It is 20 years since I’ve seen him and it was fantastic.

“He is the best player in football and he’s massive because he remembered every moment we shared when we played at Newell’s Old Boys. He’s a great, great personality and person.

“I was very happy to see him. Hugo Lloris and Harry Kane met him before the game.”

After appearing on the Wembley pitch with Ossie Ardiles, Tottenham’s breathtaking display must have made even Maradona’s knees go all tremblee.

Talisman Kane scored twice to take his tally to 17 for club and country this season.

Pochettino, who said his star striker was only taken off as a precaution before the end, added: “Fantastic performance. He’s amazing, one of the best in the world.

“I was happy with everyone from the keeper to the striker, they all gave their best. The team performance was great.”

Tottenham confirmed their status as London’s biggest title challengers as they moved level on points with Manchester United who they face at Old Trafford on Saturday.

They are five behind leaders Manchester City after 11 games unbeaten in all competitions and this latest win was remarkable after holding Real Madrid.

“That performance brought us confidence and trust,” added Pochettino.

“After a good result in Madrid, today against one of the best squads in the Premier League, this is fantastic. The players deserve great credit.”
