HUDD-HEARTED
After the cheers, no booze for Wagner, just a quiet phone call from Jurgen Klopp... then it’s down to plotting victory over his old pal at Anfield next Saturday
DAVID WAGNER celebrated loudly and proudly after Huddersfield stunned Manchester United.
But the German is expecting the sound of silence this week from best mate Jurgen Klopp.
His Terriers take on Klopp’s Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday and Wagner said: “After this result, I expect a phone call from him saying, ‘Thank you and well done’, then it will be quiet.” Wagner conducted the onpitch celebrations at the final whistle following the 2-1 win but does not like booze and instead toasted Huddersfield’s first victory against United since 1952 with a soft drink.
“Usually I take a Coke,” said the Town boss. “I don’t like alcohol so much. I drink it sometimes, but I don’t like the taste of it.
“My wife and my daughter are here and we will do something together. We are happy and will celebrate.
“I know the next game is Liverpool, but for now for me and for all of us, it’s only about today.
“Then tomorrow, come 10am when we train, we will slightly think about Liverpool.”
Wagner understands how huge this win was for his club after everything they have been through and ranks it just behind last season’s play-off
final win as his favourite moment in charge of the Terriers. “This is one of my three best matches,” he said after Aaron Mooy and Laurent Depoitre grabbed Town’s goals. “Wembley is still one step above this. But because I know how long it is since this club played Man United, even longer since this club beat Man United, this is a huge moment.”
Next weekend will be the first time Klopp and Wagner, who was best man at his wedding, have been in opposing dug-outs in a competitive game.
