Rugs & beds to blame for OAP tumbles

- BY JIM LEFFMAN

A PLUCKY weasel wriggles free from a huge beak... to avoid becoming the furs course for a hungry heron.

The small mammal then raced to safety as a crowd watched in a park.

Lesley Allen, 62, who snapped the drama in Peterborough, Cambs, said: “The heron appeared with the weasel on the opposite bank of the River Nene.

“It wriggled and struggled for almost four minutes, then finally managed to escape and ran off squealing, pursued by the heron. He had a lucky escape.”

What’s next on the menu for the heron... stoat & ale pie? OVER-65s are more likely to fracture hips by tripping over a rug or falling out of bed than slipping in snow and ice, a study found.

Out of 544 patients more than 55% got hip fractures in warm weather.

More than 75% of injuries were indoors with those outside spread fairly evenly throughout the year.

The highest proportion of fractures occurred in May (10.5%), then September (10.3%) and October (9.7%).

Study author Dr Jason Guercio, of the Hospital of Central Connecticut, said: “Falls are one of the most common concerns facing the elderly. Understanding risk factors for fractures can help focus efforts on decreasing them.”

Inside homes, rugs caused most falls, with falling out of bed the second leading cause, the survey revealed.
