IT’S TROPHY BITTER FOR O’SULLIVAN
RONNIE O’SULLIVAN has reignited a row with snooker chiefs by refusing to take the Steve Davis trophy home after his English Open Triumph.
The Rocket’s snub came following a 10-month stand-off with the authorities over receiving a permanent memento of his title wins. Five-time world champion O’Sullivan (left) wanted either the trophy or a replica after his record seventh Masters win in January.
And his anger boiled to the surface again after the brilliant 9-2 win over Kyren Wilson in Barnsley that gave him a 29th ranking title.
The English Open trophy was named after one of his boyhood heroes – and presented to him by another in Jimmy White. O’Sullivan, 41, discussing the trophy’s future, asked a staff member: “Do they want it back?”
When told “probably at some point” he added: “Then I don’t want it – keep it, take it, I don’t want it if you want it back, it’s of no interest to me. Thank you. It’s not mine, I want one I can keep. I want one permanently.”
