‘Tired May begged for help’

- BY ANDREW GREGORY Political Editor

THERESA May was left humiliated last night after a leaked report claimed she begged a Brussels chief to help her get a Brexit deal.

The Prime Minister had “deep rings under her eyes” and looked like she had not been sleeping, according to aides of EU boss Jean-Claude Juncker.

It sparked a huge row after a former senior aide of Mrs May accused Mr Juncker’s chief of staff, Martin Selmayr, of releasing the information.

The PM tried to shrug off the claims yesterday and insisted she had an “ambitious” vision for Brexit – despite no breakthrough after five rounds of talks.

At a summit last week, the other 27 EU leaders declared progress on Brexit separation issues had not been “sufficient” to open trade talks.

But they did agree to discuss it among themselves, possibly paving the way for negotiations to begin in December.

Speaking in the Commons for the first time since the summit, Mrs May said: “I am ambitious about Britain’s future and these negotiations.

“I believe by approaching these negotiations in a constructive way in a spirit of friendship and cooperation, we can and will deliver the best possible outcome that works for all our people.”

She added: “We haven’t reached a final agreement, but it’s going happen.”

In response, Jeremy Corbyn said her updates were like “Groundhog Day” – the 1993 film where Bill Murray’s lead character lives the same day repeatedly.

The Labour chief said: “Well here we are again after another round of talks.”

He added it was “no clearer” when future negotiations would begin or what the UK had agreed to so far.

The PM’s statement was overshadowed by a leaked report about her dinner with Mr Juncker and the EU’s chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier last Monday.
