FIVE THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT ENGLAND’S NEW HAT-TRICK HERO

-

RHIAN BREWSTER’S hat-trick against Brazil took England to the Under-17 World Cup final in India. The Liverpool forward, 17, also hit three goals in the quarter-final win over the USA and now has seven in the tournament.

He used to play for Chelsea. Londoner Brewster was on the books of the champions between seven and 14, but then moved to Merseyside. Explaining why he left the Blues, he said: “I told them I wanted to look at my options because I didn’t see a pathway to become a first-team player there.”

He’s been on Jurgen Klopp’s radar for some time. After seeing Brewster’s England heroics, Liverpool fans want Klopp to pick him for the first team. Brewster was an unused substitute against Crystal Palace in April. Klopp said then: “He’s a wonderfully skilled boy – a real striker.”

Earlier this year he did not own a suit. An injury crisis prompted Klopp to call up the teenager for the Palace game. There was just one catch. Klopp said: “He told me, ‘I have a washbag, but I don’t have a suit’. No problem!”

Steven Gerrard helped him overcome spot-kick blues. Brewster missed a penalty in the shoot-out as Spain won the European Under-17 championship. The Reds legend asked him, “Would you take it again?’ Brewster replied, “Yeah” and Gerrard said, “That’s right”.

He is more likely to do a knee-slide than a flip if he scores. Brewster said: “I used to do a back-flip when I scored, but I don’t think the coaches would let me get away with that playing for Liverpool!”
