Mum died from fumes after starting a fire to keep warm

- BY AMY WALKER

A MOTHER of two died from inhaling fumes after starting a fire in her garage to keep warm, an inquest heard.

Clare Alliston, 44, had earlier opened windows to clear smoke from her lounge after a birthday card caught alight last December.

The blaze in the garage exploded gas canisters at her home in Chorlton, Manchester.

The graduate was found in a foetal position untouched by the flames. She had texted a friend: “I nearly burnt to death, my sofa set on fire, thank god for Fang, [her cat] she woke me up.” Her family said she had never showed signs of intending to harm herself. In a narrative verdict, assistant Manchester coroner Zak Golombeck said: “I have heard a lot about Ms Alliston’s struggles, but also that she loving and caring, with a passion for her children.”
