Keep kids at home? Wild idea
Sometimes you just have to hand it to Channel 4’s pot-stirring documentary makers. When it comes to dropping a stink bomb in an empty lift and jumping out before the doors close, they remain the masters.
Of course, like Nigel Farage watching the phonelines light up on a radio phone-in, Channel 4 would say: “Hey, these programmes are simply sparking debate.”
It was clear from the title what C4 was up to last night. They could’ve gone for something upbeat such as Too Cool For School or School’s Out For… Ever. Instead they went for the rather loaded Feral Families, and opened with footage of kids shaving their own hair.
Then came the voiceover. “What happens when there’s no bedtime, no boundaries and even no school?”
But what followed was a warm, even-handed film that made me wonder whether my own kids would be better off at home with me. Nah, sod that. I’ve already paid for the uniform.
