RHINO IN A CHARGE AT GOODISON

- BY DAVID MADDOCK

DAVID UNSWORTH has been told he can make it impossible for Everton to bring in a big-name manager.

The Blues stalwart (above) got the nod for now when Ronald Koeman was sacked, with little indication of a time frame as owner Farhad Moshiri searches for a longterm replacement.

Yet after a dramatically improved showing in Unsworth’s first game in control, the Everton board are impressed by the caretaker’s impact.

The Goodison club more than matched Chelsea in the League Cup and were unlucky to be knocked out.

In talks on Thursday night with Moshiri and chairman Bill Kenwright, the man nicknamed Rhino was told he has a genuine chance of being offered the job permanently if he proves he is up to it.

Unsworth, 44, will remain in charge until at least the international break – and now faces the challenge of a visit to fellow strugglers Leicester, chasing the Premier League win which will boost his case.

And the club’s Under-23 coach insisted he is ready for that challenge, after receiving massive backing from Kenwright, who admires the job he has done with the club’s youngsters in winning their league last season.

Unsworth said: “My dialogue with the chairman before this was very good and I’ve spoken to him two or three times a day since.

“I also had a really good chat with Farhad.

“There are no secrets or hidden agendas. We are very honest and I’ll continue to be like that for however long.

“We spoke about the team, the performance at Chelsea and the next few games coming up. But there was no indication of a time frame, not in terms of number of games or anything like that.”

Unsworth welcomes Morgan Schneiderlin back into his squad at Leicester after a bout of sickness.
