VERTIGO (1958)

- Paul Routledge

There are many moments in Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo when I have to look away because the fear of heights is too much. James Stewart plays cop Scottie, who conquers his vertigo in a series of heart-stopping scenes, only to see the woman he loves, Madeleine (Kim Novak), fall to her death.

I didn’t realise I had vertigo until I had to walk across a ridge in the Pyrenees. The real problem isn’t fear of falling, it’s the urge to jump and get it over with. Vertigo is so real, it’s scary.
