ITV, 9pm Next month it’s 70 years since our Queen married Prince Philip. It happened only a couple of years after the Second World War ended – Britain was battered and broke, still in the grip of rationing and had hundreds of thousands of homes waiting to be rebuilt.
So the happy occasion provided a huge morale boost and a celebration for the whole country to get behind.
Over 200 million people listened on radio as the 21-year-old Princess married her naval officer hunk.
Alexander Armstrong looks back at what made the “People’s Wedding” so special, as well as meeting those who played a role in the proceedings.
They included a weaver and a seamstress, who worked on her stunning gown, and Prince Michael of Kent who – aged just five – was one of the page boys charged with carrying the 15ft veil. We also learn about the incredible 9ft high, 500lb wedding cake.
