‘Axe 200 lords and order new peers to serve 15 years max’

- BY BEN GLAZE Deputy Political Editor

THE House of Lords should be slashed from 800 to 600 peers over 10 years, a committee recommended yesterday.

Parties will be asked to agree “two out, one in” to hit the new level with new peers serving at most 15 years.

The Lord Speaker’s committee also suggests its future make-up reflects general election results.

About 81 Tory peers, 64 Labour peers and 32 Lib Dems, should go along with 58 crossbenchers, it says. Lord Speaker Lord Fowler added: “The Lords carries out vitally important work in holding the Government to account. A smaller, more effective House will build support for our vital role.” The Mirror wants the Lords axed. Last month, we told how 16 peers claimed a total of £399,137 last year, despite failing to speak, sit on a committee or submit a written question.
