Family desperate for truth in mum’s riverboat death crash

- BY AMY-CLARE MARTIN

THE family of a mum killed in a French riverboat crash are demanding answers after new facts on the tragedy emerged.

Jess Wilkes, 27, was behind the steering column, not in the bow as first thought, it was revealed yesterday.

She was flung into the River Rhone at Avignon when the vessel hit a metal bollard last Saturday.

Jess’s brother Phillip, 25, said: “The boat must have been going some speed for them to be flung overboard from there.” The personal assistant, of Lamberhurst, Kent, drowned and her boyfriend Matthew Melvin broke both legs. They were returning from an evening meal at an island restaurant. Police launched a manslaughter probe and await the results of toxicology tests on the pilot. Jess’s daughter Alissia, five, told Phillip: “I am never going to see my mummy again.”
