Nicole Kidman (with whom Farrell teams in The Killing of a Sacred Deer, see top left) is excellent as the starchy matriarch, while dressed-in-virginal-white Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning are less sheepish than they appear.

This elegant and atmospheric remake of Clint Eastwood’s 1971 Western boils over into passion and violence.
