Right bugs in the gut ‘aid cancer drug’
CANCER patients respond best to drugs if they have the right bacteria in their guts, researchers found.
Studies in the US and France found certain bugs can boost the effectiveness of PD-1 inhibitors, used to keep cancer at bay.
Currently only about 25% of patients respond to immunotherapy drugs.
Jennifer Wargo, of the MD Anderson Cancer Centre in Houston, Texas, plans to test if altering the gut’s microbiome could help melanoma patients respond to PD-1 blockers.
