Watford’s Marco Silva and former Manchester City bosses Manuel Pellegrini and Roberto Mancini were sounded out but none wants to break contracts in the middle of a season. That means Moyes will get the rest of this season to keep the club up, an outcome that could see him handed a fresh deal.

Asked about the West Ham job by beIN Sports yesterday, Moyes said: “I know what Slaven must be going through. If it becomes available then, yes, but at the moment it’s not available.”

Moyes, however, had already agreed a deal with West Ham before the interview.
