League is Premier in name only

-

I’M A huge fan of Burnley and Brighton, who are in the top 10 after 11 games.

But I have to say this season’s Premier League – other than Manchester City, who have been the epitome of consistency under Pep Guardiola (below) – has me scratching my head.

Because as the money spent on players’ fees and wages goes up, the quality seems to be flatlining or even going down.

And that is unacceptable for the world’s richest league.

When I played for Nottingham Forest, Liverpool and Aston Villa, you could play against anybody and they could beat you well, unless you were switched on.

Nowadays, you have two or three super clubs and the rest are happy to fight for scraps.

Leicester wanted to buck the trend and won the league. Burnley and Brighton are trying to buck that trend too.

But the likes of West Ham, Everton, Southampton, Crystal Palace and West Brom just think, “Let’s just stay in the league”.

They have been poor, they haven’t entertained or changed anything.
