MATCH of the Day pundit and ex-England star Alan Shearer used his head brilliantly to score goals – and he is now using it brilliantly to highlight fears over dementia.

Growing evidence of a link between the degenerative brain disease and heading a ball cannot be ignored. This is a terrible threat to health and wellbeing that requires a sustainable answer from the game’s authorities.

Dementia is the curse of England’s surviving 1966 World Cup-winning players and looking the other way is not an option.

With respected figures like Shearer speaking out publicly, we might now get a good result.
