THE STRESS OF SUCCESS

-

More than 13 million Brits feel unsuccessful and it is making them unhappy and depressed.

A third of those surveyed for professional networking site LinkedIn don’t feel they will ever achieve success and almost a third wish society considered success less important.

Just over a quarter thought traditional perceptions of success, such as earning a big salary and job promotions, are outdated. Being happy is seen as the ultimate definition of success, followed by being healthy and having good friends.

Age is seen as the biggest barrier, with those over 55 saying it is hampering their future achievements.

Women continue to get a duff deal in the workplace and earn less than men. But that gap in pay is shocking in some cities.

A study from Adzuna has revealed Chester as the most sexist city in the UK. Women’s earnings are a whopping 54.4% less than men – at an average £24,589, compared to £37,959.

This is closely followed by Crawley with a 50.9% pay difference as women earn an average £25,220 and men £38,058.

Belfast has the narrowest gender pay gap at 18.9% with average salaries at £25,258 for women and £30,040 for men, followed by Southend-on-Sea where the difference is 20.4%.

Dough Monro, co-founder of Adzuna, said: “This needs to be a rude awakening to cities up and down the UK that more must be done to bridge the gender pay gulf. There is no easy fix to even out pay levels, but employers must show more support to female staff.”
