BOSS SPOT ON FOR US SAYS GARY
GARY CAHILL believes Gareth Southgate’s own experiences can help the Three Lions put their tournament woes behind them.
The Chelsea defender, who has been first choice at the heart of the England defence in the last three major tournaments, said Southgate will know exactly what his players are going through.
“He brings his experience as a player,” said the 31-year-old. “He has lived through the moments that we’re going to live through and so he has the first-hand experience that many other international managers lack.
“He has lived through the same pressure. He knows what it takes and what comes with playing for England.”
Southgate was part of the England team that reached the semi-final of Euro 96 but famously missed a spot-kick in the shoot-out against Germany.
“He has had the highs and the lows,” said Cahill (above). “He’s touched on one tournament where he played every minute and another one where he didn’t play. So he’s had all these experiences as a player and that helps him and us to relate.”
