CHELSEA TO SPEND BIG FOR BARKLEY

- BY JOHN CROSS

CHELSEA are planning a major January spending spree as they target a big-name striker and Everton’s Ross Barkley. It is a clear sign from Stamford Bridge that their approach will not be changed by the departure of technical director Michael Emenalo and it is designed to show support for Antonio Conte. Chelsea also want Juventus left-back Alex Sandro, but may not be able to get him mid-season. They face major competition for Barkley (left) from Tottenham, who also

want the England midfielder. Everton are likely to sell in the next window rather than lose him for nothing when his contract expires in the summer.

Chelsea’s interest will guarantee a big-money auction and they want a striker to compete with Alvaro Morata.

Conte likes Crystal Palace forward Christian Benteke and has scouted Red Star Belgrade’s Richmond Boakye.

Director Marina Granovskaia will oversee transfers after Emenalo’s exit, but Roman Abramovich may be more hands-on in clear support for Conte.
